The Trump administration is now requiring some green card applicants to apply from their home countries, even if they’ve been living in the U.S. on a valid visa, according to a policy memo published last week. Jenny Beverly, a Portland-based immigration lawyer, says foreign students, guest workers and others have long been able to apply for a so-called “adjustment of status” without leaving the country.
A Martha’s Vineyard high school student who was detained by the U.S. Coast Guard and handed over to ICE last week has been released. Attorney Amelia Ritenour said the 15-year-old was released Friday after an emergency hearing. Nycolas de Al Varenga Lima, 15, and his father, Rogerio da Silva Lima, were detained by the Coast Guard in an unusual arrest while fishing together for the first time off the village of Menemsha on Martha’s Vineyard on May 18.

On a Thursday morning, Evaristo Kalonji left his home in South Portland for work. It’s one of the four places the 26-year-old can be found on any given day: At home, at work, at church, or at English classes.
